Day 9 of the 30 Day Escape Challenge.
This is the trick I get nervous about doing. I hate it and I love it, it’s mine. I hate that the actor Alec Baldwin just accidentally fired a loaded weapon on the set of the movie Rust and the director of photography died because of a gun. Several actors in history have had the same thing happen even though they used a gun loaded with blanks. How could a gun loaded with blanks be dangerous everyone assumes because it’s blanks it can’t hurt, wrong and actors have died.
“Chance is defined as the absence of any known reason why an event would turn out one way or the other. The most dangerous game ever created to tempt chance is Russian Roulette” and that’s what I’m showing today from the vaults a couple of years ago.
This is a trick (or method rather, because I didn’t invent the trick) I came up with after years ago seeing a mentalist come to Wichita, KS to tape a video on mentalism. He did it with a small starter pistol and the producer of the tape series knew what kinda stuff I liked and he like a caring father came over and got in my face and told me point-blank (no pun intended) I was never ever to do this damn trick.
Well, I hate that I’m cursed with whatever is inside me that makes me want to do something like this or allow myself to be hung by the neck from the back of a horse or get chained up and thrown thru the ice to the bottom of the Ohio River. We all have something inside us that just frankly is us and mine happens to totter on the brink of sane.
I came up with this method and it still scares the sh*t out of me every time I do it and I used to perform it a lot. I spent years redoing the speech, the rhythm, the payoff and was never fully satisfied until just recently although I don’t have a video of it because nowadays I don’t perform it often as it’s just not family-friendly.
When I started performing it I would have a person from the audience hold the final selected gun against my temple and I would count to 3 and they would pull the trigger, I stopped this when at a college show this huge football player was banging the gun against my head and when I looked at his eyes I could see he was scared and he finally said I can’t do this. So yeah, I’ve changed it a lot over the years. I’ve had 7 or 8 magicians come up after shows and say that is simply the scariest trick I have ever seen please don’t do it again. And so it sits creating memories, not often brought out to say hi to an audience giving them a scare and a bit of wonderment.
